As high speed serial data rates advance, we face a fundamental shift. Conventional NRZ signaling is being replaced by PAM4, a modulation scheme that takes half the bandwidth to transmit the same payload as the equivalent NRZ signal. PAM4 requires more accurate measurements as it introduces potential issues that are not present in NRZ. General operating principles and theory for PAM4 along with inter-symbol interference, cross talk, Channel Operating Margin (COM) and identifying how to make accurate measurements are also discussed.
